History
Flear
& Thomson Ltd, in all certainty
is one of the oldest and longest
established motor retailing companies
in Britain today.
Established
in 1870, Mr William Flear and
Mr David Thomson commenced business
in Upper Station Road Dunfermline,
as Engineers & Millwright
proprietors specialising in Steam
Traction Engines and Agricultural
Machinery as well as the more
traditional horse pulled carts.
In July 1891 Mr Flear sold his
share of the business to Mr Thomson
and it is believed he then emigrated
to Pittsburgh in the USA to work
for Mr Andrew Carnegie. The Steel
Magnate was actually born in Dunfermline
before he emigrated to the United
States as a child.
So renowned
was the company regarding the
standard of their engineering
and knowledge of agricultural
machinery that they soon became
known far and wide. So much
so that work and orders came
in from as far away as Australia.
For example despite the great
distances involved in those
days in 1895 The Hawkesbury
Agricultural College of New
South Wales bought from Flear
and Thomson a Turnip Thinning
Machine that was invented by
the company. However as
petrol agricultural machinery
became more popular followed
by automobiles this became a
natural progression for the
company. The company finally
diversified in 1927 to that
of garage proprietors and motor
engineers. For the next 45 years
Flear & Thomson also both
sold and maintained Hillman,
Humber cars and also Commer
commercial vehicles.
In
1927 Mr Andrew Buchanan started
work as a apprentice mechanic.
He quickly worked his way up the
business. It was in the late 1940's
now long established under Mr
David Thomson, son of one of the
partners, that Mr Andrew Buchanan
was made a company director. In
1951 the firm was made a Limited
Company and a few years later
Andrew Buchanan took full control
of Flear & Thomson Ltd.
Andrew's
son Mr George Buchanan joined
the company in 1959 as a apprentice
mechanic,working his way through
the business and eventually taking
over everyday control in 1972.
The business expanded holding
the franchise for both Vauxhall-Opel
and Fiat.
It
was in 1992 that Flear & Thomson
acquired the Nissan franchise.This
followed in 2003 with the acquisition
of the Kia Motors franchise.
To
this day Flear & Thomson Ltd
is still owned and run by the
Buchanan family through Andrew's
grandsons and George's sons Mr
Scott Buchanan and Mr Paul Buchanan.
As
Scotland's second longest running
Nissan franchise and more recently
adding the Kia franchise we have
both the knowledge and understanding
to give the best possible customer
service. Our strength lies in
